Atocha

The story of Nuestra Señora de Atocha is a captivating tale of maritime history, treasure, and adventure. Constructed in Havana Harbor and part of the Terre Firme Fleet, the Atocha embarked on its ill-fated journey to Spain laden with a rich cargo of gold, silver, and precious gems. Tragically, a fierce hurricane scattered the fleet, sinking the Atocha off the coast of Cuba. The ship's treasures remained lost for centuries, eluding countless salvage attempts until Mel Fisher and his team made their historic discovery in 1985, recovering an astounding $450 million worth of treasure. The Atocha's bounty included intricately crafted gold and silver coins, known as "cobs," emeralds from Colombia's Muzo Mine, and a plethora of artifacts intended for Spanish royalty and nobility. This monumental find is not only a testament to the ship's historical significance but also highlights the enduring allure and mystery of its lost and recovered riches.
